Meet Dr. Debra McLaren

Who am I?

I am Dr. Debra McLaren, and I am running for the Chula Vista Elementary School District Board of Trustees Seat #1. Experience Matters!

About Me

With over 30 years of service in public education, I have dedicated my career to supporting students, educators, and communities. My experience spans roles as an educator, principal, district leader, and award-winning administrator. This deep commitment to education and my desire to give back have inspired me to seek a seat on the Chula Vista School Board. As a champion for equity, I have guided schools toward state and regional recognition and mentored emerging leaders throughout California. In 2019, the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 18 honored me as Principal of the Year. My background includes expertise in negotiations, revising board policies, and school governance. Since retiring in 2023, I have worked as an Executive Coach for the National Center of Urban Schools Transformation (NCUST), helping education leaders clear their administrative service credential, conducting equity audits, and evaluating schools for the NCUST America’s Best Schools award.

My Campaign Focus

  1. Safer Schools – I am committed to promoting policies, practices, and procedures that foster secure campuses, strong mental health support, positive behavior systems, and inclusive environments. Every child should feel protected, heard, and valued. The experiences students have when entering campus and classrooms shape not only how they view themselves but also how they learn and envision their futures. When students are safe, welcomed, challenged, and supported, they flourish.
  2. Academic Equity – I am dedicated to ensuring that policies, practices, and procedures provide every student—regardless of background, language, identity, or circumstance—with equal access to high-quality teaching, resources, and opportunities to excel. Accountability systems must remove barriers, offer meaningful support, and uphold high expectations for all learners. When schools pursue academic equity with intention and integrity, excellence is achievable for every child.
  3. Financial Stewardship and Responsibility – I believe responsible stewardship of public funds is crucial to maintaining trust in our schools. Every dollar entrusted to the district belongs to the community, and families deserve transparency and integrity in how resources are managed. I will work with fellow board members to align spending with student needs, plan for long-term stability, and communicate openly about decision-making. When school board trustees honor public funds with care and accountability, they strengthen both educational outcomes and public confidence in the system that serves every child.
